Tree Root Intrusion Removal NJ
Tree root intrusion is the single leading cause of sewer line failures in New Jersey's older neighborhoods — and Bergen County, Passaic County, Essex County, and Hudson County are packed with exactly the kind of mature trees and aging clay tile pipe that create the problem. Roots enter sewer lines through hairline cracks, deteriorated joints, and separated pipe sections, then grow aggressively inside the warm, moist, nutrient-rich environment until they completely block the line.
Jersey Drain Cleaning removes root intrusions from residential sewer lines using high-pressure hydro jetting with specialized root-cutting nozzles, mechanical cutting equipment, and sewer cameras to assess the extent of root infiltration before and after service. We don't just clear the blockage — we show you exactly what's happening inside your pipe and what needs to happen next.
Most NJ homeowners who experience a root intrusion don't realize that clearing the roots is only half the job. If the pipe crack or gap that let roots in isn't addressed, roots will grow back — often faster the second time. After removal, we recommend a camera inspection and, when appropriate, trenchless pipe lining to seal the entry points permanently.
The NJ Root Intrusion Problem
The majority of homes built in New Jersey before 1970 use clay tile sewer laterals — pipe sections approximately 24 inches long with rubber-sealed or mortar-packed joints at every connection. As clay tile ages, mortar deteriorates and joints separate slightly. Each tiny gap is an invitation for moisture-seeking tree roots.
Neighborhoods like Garfield, Lodi, Paterson, Newark, Hackensack, and Clifton — areas with dense housing stock from the 1920s through 1950s — see root intrusion calls regularly. The trees planted when these neighborhoods were new now have root systems spanning 40–60 feet underground, and they have decades of experience finding water inside sewer pipes.
How We Remove Tree Root Intrusions
Camera Inspection
We run a sewer camera through the line to locate root masses, assess the extent of infiltration, identify damaged pipe sections, and determine the best removal method.
Root Cutting
Using mechanical root-cutting blades designed for sewer pipe, we cut through root masses and break them into flushable pieces. For smaller infiltrations, we may go straight to hydro jetting.
Hydro Jetting
High-pressure water (up to 4,000 PSI) with a root-cutting nozzle scours the pipe walls, removes residual root material, and flushes debris downstream. This leaves the pipe interior as clean as possible.
Post-Removal Inspection
A second camera pass confirms the line is clear and shows us pipe condition — identifying cracks, bellies, or offsets that roots will exploit again if not repaired.
Repair Recommendations
We provide an honest assessment of pipe condition and, where appropriate, recommend trenchless lining to seal entry points and extend pipe life by decades.

Customer Reviews
"Had repeated main line backups every few months. Jersey Drain Cleaning came out, ran the camera, and showed me exactly where the oak tree roots had gotten in. They jetted the line and I haven't had a backup since. Worth every penny."
Robert L. — Clifton, NJ
"My house is from 1942 with the original clay pipe. They found extensive root intrusion on the camera and used the root cutter followed by jetting. Showed me the before and after on camera. Extremely professional."
Sandra K. — Lodi, NJ
